Youth Leaders Praise INEC for Voter Registration Extension

Ethnic youth leaders have commended the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Moham Kudu Haruna, for the decision to extend the voter registration deadline to May 10, 2026. This announcement was made in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja.

The extension, which was set to originally end on April 21, 2026, was made after consultations with political party leaders earlier in the week. The aim is to ensure inclusivity and provide sufficient time for compliance.

Mirabel Ashara, the deputy spokesperson for the youth leaders, described the move as a demonstration of fair response from the commission. The extension allows political parties the opportunity to conduct thorough internal audits and update their membership lists to ensure that eligible members are not left out.

The youth leaders emphasized that this decision reflects INEC's commitment to credible and transparent electoral processes and urged political actors to take advantage of the extension responsibly, warning against any attempts to exploit it for partisan advantage, which could undermine public trust in the electoral system.
