Tomiyasu Recalled to Japan National Team for Friendlies

Takehiro Tomiyasu, a former Arsenal defender, has been recalled to the Japan national team for the first time in nearly two years, as announced on Thursday. This call-up comes ahead of friendly matches against Scotland on March 28 and England three days later.

The 27-year-old has struggled with injuries and agreed to leave Arsenal in July last year, with 12 months remaining on his contract. He focused on rehabilitation and signed with Ajax in December, making his return to action in January 2024.

Coach Hajime Moriyasu expressed optimism about Tomiyasu's condition improving further before the World Cup. The team is preparing for the tournament, having been drawn in Group F alongside the Netherlands, Tunisia, and the United States.

Tomiyasu has 42 caps for Japan and played in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Other players returning from injury include Hiroki Ito, while Takumi Minamino and Takefusa Kubo will miss the March friendlies.
