Security Flaws Exposed by Pantami's Ministerial Role

Dennis Amachree, a retired Assistant Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), stated that Isa Pantami's appointment as Minister of Communications and Digital Economy by former President Muhammadu Buhari raised significant national security concerns and exposed flaws in Nigeria's security vetting process. In his memoir, ‘DSS @40: My Journey Behind the Shield’, Amachree revisited the 2021 controversy surrounding Pantami, whose past sermons allegedly expressed support for extremist groups like al-Qaeda, the Taliban, and Boko Haram.

Amachree questioned how Pantami could have passed the DSS's extensive background checks, which examine past affiliations, public speeches, and online activities. He expressed skepticism that Pantami's extremist sympathies would have gone unnoticed by intelligence officers.

Amachree suggested that political factors might have influenced the vetting process, leading to either a sanitized report or the disregard of adverse findings. He noted that the controversy undermined public confidence in Nigeria's counterterrorism efforts, especially as the government was prosecuting insurgents while defending Pantami's appointment.
