Nigeria Police Force Addresses Bail Extortion Issues

The Nigeria Police Force, represented by CSP Anietie Iniedu, stated that every suspect released on bail must sign a form confirming that no money was exchanged for their release. Iniedu highlighted that many suspects sign this document without reading it, primarily due to a desire to leave the police station quickly.

He emphasized that the law prohibits any officer from collecting money for bail at police stations, regardless of the offense or bail conditions. Iniedu acknowledged the occurrence of extortion and attributed it to a lack of public awareness regarding legal rights.

He advised suspects not to resist openly but to contact the police directly if they are asked for bail money. Iniedu provided two phone lines for direct complaints and mentioned a third line for text messages or WhatsApp communication.

This initiative aims to improve trust between the police and the public and ensure that individuals are aware of their rights.
