FAAN Launches Facial Recognition System for Airports

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announced the introduction of a facial recognition system, termed "v-pass," aimed at replacing physical identification at domestic airports. This initiative is part of FAAN's broader digital transformation program, which seeks to enhance airport security and streamline passenger processes, ultimately improving the overall travel experience.

Passengers will undergo a one-time registration process, where their identities will be authenticated using facial recognition technology at automated electronic gates installed in domestic terminals. FAAN's Director of Commercial Business Development, Adebola Joi Agunbiad, stated that travelers will no longer need to present physical identification during the boarding process, significantly reducing wait times and facilitating smoother passenger movement.

The digital platform will also enable FAAN and domestic airlines to maintain a comprehensive and accurate database of passengers. FAAN assured the public that the v-pass system will comply with Nigeria's data protection regulations, although no specific rollout date or timeline for passenger enrollment has been announced.
