FAAN Implements 2012 Vehicle Requirement for Airport Taxis

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has mandated that airport taxi operators utilize vehicles manufactured from 2012 onwards, aiming to enhance safety, comfort, and service standards for passengers. Vehicles manufactured before 2012 will be removed from operations, with an October 2026 compliance deadline set after several extensions.

FAAN stated that passengers deserve clean, roadworthy, and professionally maintained vehicles. However, airport cab operators are protesting the financial burden of compliance, estimating that replacing older vehicles could cost between ₦15 million and ₦18 million, while current earnings leave little room for such purchases.

Prince Amosola, chairman of the airport cab operators, expressed support for fleet upgrades but requested more time to raise funds. Some electric vehicle options discussed could cost around ₦38 million.

Operators highlighted that high operating costs and competition leave them struggling financially, with some drivers taking home as little as ₦10,000 from a week’s work.
