Niger Governor Bago Clarifies Remarks on Fulani Leaders

On July 22, 2026, a claim circulated on social media alleging that Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago ordered the removal of Fulani district heads. However, a review of the governor's speech revealed that he did not make such an announcement.

Instead, during his condolence visit to the Emir of Kagara, he appealed to Fulani community leaders to assist in identifying criminal elements within their communities and emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders. He suggested that the Emir recognize the Fulani community by granting them appropriate titles for representation in the Emir’s palace, rather than simply holding the title of Seriki Fulani.

The governor also cautioned against land sales without government consent and warned vigilantes against harassment. Local verification confirmed that the viral claim misrepresented the governor's remarks, which focused on cooperation and responsibility rather than removal.
