PDP and LP Candidates Face Uncertainty Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the upload of candidates' names for the 2027 elections, affecting 2,098 candidates from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP). The process, which began on July 18 and will conclude on August 8, 2026, is marred by leadership crises within both parties.

The PDP, led by Abdulrahman Moham and Nenadi Usman, faces challenges from a faction led by Dr. Tanimu Turaki.

Similarly, the LP has a faction led by Barrister Julius Abur. Despite a court ruling recognizing the leadership of Moham and Usman, the fate of the 993 state house assembly candidates and 28 governorship candidates produced by the Turaki-led faction remains uncertain.

The PDP has begun uploading names, with plans to complete the process within the stipulated timeframe. However, the ongoing legal battles and lack of INEC recognition for the factions complicate the situation further.
