Enugu Government Denies False Tax Protest Claims

The Enugu State Government, represented by Hon Onyekwere Nwobodo, dismissed reports of a protest by bus drivers and keke riders over alleged excessive taxes as false and malicious. The government clarified that the protest was not about tax or fuel price increases but rather a plea for designated parking spaces within a new terminal.

Drivers had been violating no-parking orders around the Ogbete main market, prompting the need for allocated spaces. The statement accused opposition groups of misrepresenting the situation to create a false narrative of discontent as political campaigns were underway.

It noted that this alleged protest had not occurred during the three years of the current administration, which has maintained a friendly tax regime. The government urged citizens to seek security clearance for genuine grievances to ensure orderly processes in the future.

The police were credited for preventing potential unrest stemming from the misrepresented incident.
