Religious Leaders Urged to Combat Witchcraft Accusations

During the Toyin Falola Interview held on Sunday, Professor Toyin Falola and a distinguished panel, including Professor Godwin Sogolo, Rev. Prof. Grace Sintim Adasi, Prof. David Frankfurter, Dr. Claire Ayelotan, and Prof. John Azumah, examined the theme “Witchcraft in Africa.” They called for greater responsibility among religious and traditional leaders, warning that spiritual claims can lead to the persecution of vulnerable individuals. Dr. Claire Ayelotan highlighted that religious leaders have the power to provide spiritual guidance without naming individuals as responsible for misfortunes.

She warned that the danger escalates when identifiable targets are named, leading to violence and denial of care. Ayelotan urged religious institutions to discipline leaders who accuse individuals of witchcraft.

Prof. David Frankfurter emphasized the need to scrutinize the authority of those who claim to identify evil, noting the sociological implications of such accusations on communities.
