Ogun Woman Arrested for Smuggling Drugs to Death Row Son

Iyabo Sowunmi was apprehended by the Ogun State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service on Friday, August 28, 2026, for allegedly trying to smuggle suspected illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ibara, Abeokuta. The drugs, believed to be "Colos," a psychoactive synthetic substance, were concealed in a sachet of a popular beverage powder intended for her son, Dare Sowunmi, who is currently on death row at the facility.

Olayinka Odukoya, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Command, reported that the arrest occurred around 1:33 PM during routine screening at the facility's main entrance. Following her interception, Iyabo Sowunmi was detained and subsequently handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and prosecution.

Abioye Adesina, the Controller of Corrections for Ogun State, praised the security personnel for their vigilance and reiterated the command's zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking and contraband in custodial facilities.
