Nigeria and Alberta Strengthen Gas Development Cooperation

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Canadian province of Alberta are taking steps to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the gas sector, focusing on energy transition and emission reduction. This initiative was discussed during a meeting between Nigeria's Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ekperikpe Ekpo, and Alberta's Minister of Energy, Brian Jean, in Calgary, Canada.

Ekpo's spokesman, Louis Ibah, stated that Nigeria is committed to leveraging its 215 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas reserves as a transition fuel to drive economic growth and enhance energy security while supporting lower carbon development. Both parties expressed readiness to collaborate on technical cooperation and knowledge sharing, particularly in carbon capture and methane reduction initiatives.

They concluded the meeting by agreeing to establish a joint technical working group to develop a memorandum of understanding covering key areas of cooperation, facilitating technical exchange in carbon capture and emission reduction.
