Nigeria's FEC Approves National Bioenergy Strategic Plan

On Wednesday, the Federal Executive Council (FEC), presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, approved a National Bioenergy Strategic Plan aimed at enhancing Nigeria's energy security. The plan focuses on harnessing the country's vast biomass and biological resources, including agricultural waste, forestry resources, and livestock residues, to improve energy access and sufficiency.

Dr Kingsley Udeh, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, announced the approval at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The initiative seeks to create a coordinated framework for converting biological materials into energy, thereby reducing reliance on conventional energy sources.

Udeh also mentioned the approval of the Nigeria Biotechnology Partnership, which aims to attract investment and expertise into the bioenergy sector. The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) will lead the implementation of the strategic plan, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of agriculture, energy, environment, and investment in developing the bioenergy sector.

The ultimate goal is to make bioenergy a significant part of Nigeria's energy mix.
