Nigeria Strengthens Child Protection and Family Welfare Systems

The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development held a stakeholders meeting from May 15 to 19, 2026, at the Continental Hotel in Abuja, focusing on strengthening child protection and family welfare systems across Nigeria. The meeting aimed to review the validity of Nigeria's national policies and instruments, including the draft 5th and 8th combined periodic reports on child rights.

Mr. Esuabana Nko Asany represented Hajiya Imaan Suleiman Ibrahim, the Honourable Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development.

The meeting underscored the federal government's commitment to fulfilling its international obligations regarding the protection and welfare of women, children, and vulnerable groups. It emphasized the importance of document review and strategic guidance for future interventions to strengthen nationwide protection systems.

The forum aimed to produce actionable recommendations to enhance child protection systems and promote family-based care. UNICEF's Mona Aika and Save the Children's Jane Mbagi Mutua praised the federal ministry's leadership in advancing child protection efforts.
