FG Launches Committee for Democracy Day Celebrations

On Tuesday, the Federal Government of Nigeria inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee to coordinate activities for the upcoming Democracy Day celebration on June 12. The committee aims to pay tribute to the late Chief Moshood Abiola, recognized as a hero of the June 12 struggle.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, emphasized the significance of Democracy Day as an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by Nigerians in the fight for democratic governance. Akume noted that the celebration would showcase the government's achievements and reaffirm its commitment to democratic ideals.

The committee is tasked with executing approved activities, which include a world press conference on June 4, special prayers on June 5, inter-denominational church services on June 7, public lectures on June 9, youth and women orientation programs on June 10, a presidential broadcast on June 12, and a joint national assembly address. Akume expressed confidence in the committee's ability to deliver a successful commemoration of Nigeria's democratic heroes.
