FG Launches Committee for 27th Democracy Day Celebration

On June 2, 2026, the Federal Government of Nigeria inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) for the 27th Democracy Day celebration during a ceremony held in the SGF's conference room at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja. Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), emphasized the importance of Democracy Day as an opportunity to reflect on the resilience and sacrifices made by Nigerians in the struggle for democratic governance.

He paid tribute to late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, a key figure in the June 12, 1993, democratic struggle. The committee is tasked with ensuring the successful execution of activities earmarked for the celebration, which includes a world press conference, special prayers, a public lecture, and a presidential broadcast on June 12, 2026.

Senator Akume expressed confidence in the committee's ability to deliver a celebration that appropriately reflects Nigeria's democratic achievements.
