Nigeria Launches Technical Committee for National Water Compact

The Federal Government of Nigeria inaugurated a Technical Committee on December 5, 2023, to drive the development of a National Water Compact, which aims to strengthen water governance and improve access to safe water and sanitation services nationwide. The ceremony was conducted by Engr.

Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation.

The National Water Compact is intended to provide a strategic framework for sustainable development within Nigeria's water sector, aligning with international best practices. The initiative is expected to be finalized by December 2026.

Prof. Utsev emphasized the importance of synergy among relevant ministries, departments, and agencies, as well as sub-national governments and critical stakeholders for the successful implementation of the compact.

Dr. Emaso Okop Umobong, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, described the committee as crucial for Nigeria's commitment to the African Union regarding water security and sanitation service delivery.

The event also featured remarks from Mr. Babarind Segun Mukaila, who noted the compact's role in enhancing water institutions and climate resilience.
