Nigeria Inaugurates Textile Steering Committee for Growth

On April 24, 2025, the Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by Sen. George Akum, inaugurated the Textile Steering Committee (TSC) to develop a framework for establishing the Cotton Textile Garment Development Board (CTGDB).

This initiative is part of efforts to revitalize Nigeria's cotton, textile, and garment (CTG) sector, stimulate economic growth, and align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. The TSC will prioritize local content activities and encourage public-private partnerships to address challenges such as declining production, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to finance.

The committee's composition includes representatives from various organizations, including the Nigerian Textile Manufacturers Association and the National Cotton Association of Nigeria. The establishment of the CTGDB was discussed during the 149th National Economic Council meeting, emphasizing the sector's historical significance to Nigeria's economy and its potential to provide employment and support rural livelihoods.
