FG Advocates Collaboration in Nigerian Electricity Sector

The Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by Mr. Rilwan Lanre Babalola, urged the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and state electricity regulatory commissions to work collaboratively as partners under the Electric Power Sector Reform Act.

This call was made during a workshop in Abuja aimed at fostering dialogue and cooperation to enhance the Nigerian electricity market. Babalola emphasized that major reforms in the electricity sector create new opportunities and interfaces between federal and state institutions, which must respect their respective responsibilities.

He noted that while the Electric Power Sector Reform Act decentralizes governance, it does not physically decentralize the electricity network, which remains interconnected. The success of decentralization should be measured by the achievement of a coherent, efficient, and bankable integrated electricity market.

Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe, chairman of the Senate Committee on Power, reaffirmed the committee's commitment to enabling laws that allow federal and state electricity regulators to perform complementary roles.
