FG and NYSC Collaborate to Combat Illicit Arms Proliferation

The Federal Government, via the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), has formed a partnership with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to address insecurity and the spread of illicit small arms and light weapons in Nigeria. Maj. Gen. Abubakar Adamu (retd.), the Northeast Zonal Director of NCCSALW, announced this collaboration on Friday at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Bauchi.

He emphasized the vital role corps members can play in advocating for an arms-free society at their places of primary assignment. The partnership has already shown positive results in Borno and Yobe states, with corps members actively involved in community sensitization efforts.

Established in 2021 under the Office of the National Security Adviser, NCCSALW aims to regulate small arms and light weapons in Nigeria. Adamu highlighted the dangers posed by illicit arms, including their contribution to banditry and insurgency, and called for collaboration with NYSC coordinators to set up Community Development Service groups focused on this issue.

NYSC Coordinator Umoren Kufre expressed support for the initiative.
