FG and NYSC Collaborate to Combat Certificate Fraud

The Federal Government of Nigeria is advancing the digital integration of educational records in collaboration with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to address certificate racketeering and improve qualification verification. This initiative was announced by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, during a meeting with NYSC Director-General Brig Gen Olakunle Nafiu in Abuja.

Alausa stated that the reforms are part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at closing loopholes in educational record management. The Nigerian Education Repository Data Bank will collect and verify university certificates and track learners, while the Nigerian Education Data Infrastructure will link records throughout a learner's educational journey.

Ongoing discussions include developing an application programming interface for faster verification between the Ministry and NYSC. Alausa identified challenges such as discrepancies in names and issues with part-time National Diploma graduates, emphasizing the need for a national Learner Identification Number to ensure accurate identity records from the start of education.
