FG Implements Measures to Protect Health Workers

The Federal Government of Nigeria has ordered immediate nationwide measures to safeguard health workers following a significant increase in assaults, intimidation, and harassment within federal health institutions. This directive was issued after the Ministerial Committee on the Harassment of Health Workers by Security Personnel submitted its findings, revealing that attacks had become widespread.

The committee was established on May 19, 2026, after an incident at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital involving Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives. The report documented 18 cases of assault and harassment over the past year, affecting health workers, patients, and the public.

Key factors contributing to these incidents included poor communication, long wait times, inadequate staffing, and abuse of authority. Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, approved the committee's recommendations, emphasizing that health workers must operate in a safe environment.

The government will prosecute anyone who assaults or intimidates health workers under existing laws.
