Nigeria Launches New National Peace Policy Initiative

The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with key stakeholders in the peacebuilding sector, has initiated the development of a new National Peace Policy. This initiative aims to strengthen conflict prevention, coordination, and resilience across the country.

The launch occurred during a three-day technical workshop organized by the Office for Strategic Preparedness and Resilience (OSPRE) and the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), in partnership with Triple Peace Africa, held in Abuja. The workshop, themed ‘Building an Inclusive National Infrastructure for Peace and Resilience,’ included representatives from various government ministries, civil society organizations, and peacebuilding practitioners.

Chris Ngwodo, Director-General of OSPRE, stated that the new policy framework would align with current realities and address developments since the last National Peace Policy was attempted in 2012. Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, Director-General of IPCR, emphasized the policy's importance in enhancing Nigeria's peacebuilding architecture.

The framework aims to promote proactive conflict management and involves all relevant stakeholders.
