Nigeria Establishes SOPs for Disarmament and Reintegration

The Federal Government of Nigeria has established standard operating procedures (SOPs) for disarmament and reintegration operations, disclosed by Maj Gen Adamu Laka, the National Security Adviser, during a workshop in Abuja. This initiative is part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria's response to terrorism and violent extremism.

The SOPs are designed to translate strategic objectives of the national disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) framework into practical guidance for implementation. The framework aims to ensure transparency, accountability, and adherence to human rights principles.

The NCTC, in collaboration with various stakeholders, developed these procedures through extensive consultations, drawing on national experiences and international best practices. The SOPs will facilitate coordination among agencies and ensure that DDR programs are implemented effectively.

The NCTC also plans to establish state DDR committees in Kaduna, Katsina, and Zamfara to oversee local implementation. This comprehensive approach addresses Nigeria's evolving security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, and communal conflicts.
