FG Overhauls Tertiary Accreditation, Pays Tools Allowance

The Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated an overhaul of the accreditation system for tertiary institutions, led by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa. He warned institutions against presenting borrowed staff, equipment, and facilities during accreditation exercises, stating that non-compliance could result in job loss for officials and the revocation of operating licenses for private institutions.

Alausa announced the full payment of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance to academic staff in federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education for the period of January to August 2026. During the inauguration of the Ministerial Committee on Strengthening Accreditation and Quality Assurance Systems for Tertiary Institutions, he emphasized the need for a continuous, digital, and data-driven quality assurance system.

Alausa stated that institutions should not create a temporary impression of their capacity for accreditation visits and called for a comprehensive digital identity management framework for staff verification. The government plans to utilize technology for verifying infrastructure and personnel.
