FG Trains 500 Women and Youths in Ogun on Vegetable Farming

The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT), trained 500 women and youths in Ogun State from August 10 to 13 on modern vegetable production techniques. The training aimed to boost food security and create jobs at the grassroots level.

Participants learned about the production techniques for tomato, okra, and Telfairia, including the economics of production, marketing, and record-keeping. The empowerment aspect included starter packs with cash and farm inputs such as seed planters, plastic crates, raincoats, watering cans, and rain boots.

Muhammed Attanda, executive director of NIHORT, represented by Joel Akinfasoye, the training coordinator from Hort Consultancy Ventures, emphasized Nigeria's position as the 14th largest producer of tomato and the largest producer of okra globally. The program aims to enhance socio-economic inclusion, food security, employment opportunities, and wealth creation, with a focus on improved production practices.
