Nigeria Launches First National Land Transport Policy

The Federal Government of Nigeria unveiled its first National Land Transport Policy on Thursday at the 19th National Council on Transportation in Abuja. Vice-President Kashim Shettima stated that the policy is a significant step towards establishing an integrated, efficient, safe, affordable, and sustainable transportation system to bolster economic growth and national development.

The government’s transportation strategy aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on infrastructure that supports a productive economy. Shettima noted a shift from isolated transportation projects to an integrated national network that includes roads, railways, ports, inland waterways, and aviation.

He highlighted the railway modernization program as vital, mentioning the Kano-Maradi Railway Project, which connects Kano to Maradi in the Republic of Niger, enhancing domestic connectivity and regional trade. The Vice-President also stressed the need for urban transportation solutions to address congestion in Nigerian cities and called for collaboration with states to implement high-grade urban transportation projects.
