Urgent Call for Power Quality Fixes in Nigeria's Elevators

Experts are urging the Federal Government of Nigeria to address the risks associated with poor power quality that affect elevators, following recent incidents where individuals became trapped in elevators across major cities. Ken Ezeagu, Director of Zagu Power System Limited, emphasized that modern elevators heavily depend on advanced electronic control systems that require stable power conditions to function optimally.

He noted that even brief disturbances in power supply can lead to unexpected shutdowns, leaving occupants stranded. Ezeagu warned that the implications of poor power quality extend beyond elevators, affecting various sectors such as healthcare, broadcasting, and data centers, which are particularly vulnerable to unstable power supply.

He dismissed the common belief that installing uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) automatically guarantees protection, advocating for advanced solutions like online double conversion systems to ensure stable power output. Ezeagu called for business owners to prioritize power quality and invest in reliable solutions to prevent incidents, stressing the importance of understanding the differences between basic backup systems and advanced power conditioning technologies.
