FIFA Bans Prestianni, Missing World Cup Matches

Gianluca Prestianni, a 20-year-old player for SL Benfica, has been handed a six-match ban by FIFA, following a recommendation from UEFA due to the use of homophobic language. This ban, which was confirmed on April 24, will see Prestianni serve an immediate three-match suspension, with the remaining two years suspended.

Consequently, he will miss the first two matches of the upcoming 2026 World Cup, where he was called up to the Argentina National Team, including the reigning World Cup champions' friendly matches against Mauritania and Zambia in March. The decision was made by FIFA's disciplinary committee, which extended the ban to have a worldwide effect, meaning Prestianni will also miss UEFA competitions during this period.
