FIFA and CAF Suspend NFF Electoral Process Amid Crisis

FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have stated they have not reached a conclusion regarding the crisis within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). They confirmed the suspension of the NFF electoral process and announced plans for a joint assessment mission to Nigeria.

A letter from FIFA, dated September 7, 2026, signed by Elkhan Mammadov, indicated that both organizations are examining the implications of the recent sacking of the Ibrahim Gusau-led NFF board. They directed that no further steps regarding the NFF electoral process be taken, effectively postponing the proposed September 27 election.

This decision follows the mass resignation of NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and other Executive Committee members on August 27. The National Sports Commission appointed Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme as interim General Secretary and Dr Ademola Olajire as interim Deputy General Secretary.
