FIFA Suspends NFF Election Amid Leadership Crisis

FIFA has suspended the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) election scheduled for September 27 due to a crisis triggered by the mass resignation of key officials, including NFF President Ibrahim Gusau and General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi. This resignation occurred on August 27, following concerns over the poor performance of Nigeria's national and youth teams, particularly after the senior men's and women's teams failed to qualify for their respective World Cups.

FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) communicated their decision in a letter to NFF Deputy General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme. The National Sports Commission (NSC) intervened after President Bola Tinubu's call for action regarding the failures in Nigerian football.

An NSC delegation, led by Chairman Shehu Dikko, met with FIFA President Gianni Infantino on September 1 in Zurich to discuss the situation. FIFA stated that it is reviewing the legal and governance implications of the developments and has not reached any conclusions regarding the next steps.

The suspension of the election allows FIFA and CAF to complete their assessment.
