Nigeria Tackles Hosting Deficits to Boost Digital Sovereignty

In Abuja last week, the Internet Exchange Point Nigeria (IXPN) and Teleafrica Communications conducted a two-day technical workshop aimed at addressing Nigeria's hosting deficits and enhancing digital sovereignty. The workshop gathered industry leaders, network engineers, and telecommunications experts to strategize on expanding infrastructure and eliminating system bottlenecks to drive Nigeria's digital transformation.
Currently, Nigeria hosts only 22 percent of its top 1,000 accessed websites, trailing the continental average of 34 percent. Muham Rudman, Managing Director of IXPN, emphasized the urgent need to bridge the gap in the number of Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs), with Nigeria registering just one ASN per million people compared to 13 in South Africa and 43 in Brazil.
The workshop underscored IXPN's critical role as a catalyst for the nation's tech ecosystem, aiming to keep local traffic within Nigeria. Ikechukwu Nnamani, Chairman of Teleafrica Communications, showcased the company's interconnect security switch center, which supports the vision of evenly distributing digital services across the country.
