Oluremi Tinubu Pledges ₦2 Billion for Akwete Weaving

On Tuesday, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu visited the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Village in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State, where she announced a ₦2 billion intervention fund aimed at revitalizing the Akwete traditional textile industry. She expressed her admiration for the quality and cultural significance of Akwete fabric, stating her intention to wear it if her husband, President Bola Tinubu, secures a second term.

Senator Tinubu praised the women artisans for preserving the weaving tradition and highlighted the successful transfer of skills to younger generations. She emphasized the importance of embracing locally produced fabrics and cultural identity.

The intervention fund is intended to improve facilities at the production center, transforming it into a modern heritage and economic hub, thereby strengthening the industry and creating opportunities for artisans. Senator Tinubu underscored the spiritual and historical significance of Akwete weaving, calling for greater recognition of the fabric both in Nigeria and internationally.
