Oluremi Tinubu Donates N2bn for Akwete Weaving Heritage

On Tuesday, during her visit to Aba, Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, donated N2 billion to the Abia State government to support the development of Akwete fabric, a traditional hand-woven textile from Akwete town. The donation is intended to enhance the Akwete production site, create jobs, and boost the local economy.

Tinubu praised the unique qualities of Akwete fabric, which is crafted by women using cotton, raffia, and silk, known for its vibrant colors and intricate designs. She emphasized the importance of preserving this cultural heritage, encouraging the younger generation to embrace traditional attire that connects them with their roots.

Tinubu expressed her commitment to promoting Akwete fabric on a national level and promised Governor Alex Otti that if President Bola Tinubu wins the 2027 presidential election, she would wear a wrapper and “buba” made from Akwete fabric for the inauguration.
