Flashback: When FIFA Queried Nigeria After Gov Odili Splashed Dollars on Ghana Black Stars

In a flashback to the 2002 World Cup qualifiers, FIFA queried Nigeria after allegations surfaced that Governor Odili of Rivers State had splashed dollars on the Ghana Black Stars. The Nigerian Football Association (NFA) received a query from Liberia, claiming that Nigeria had bribed Ghana to qualify for the tournament.

The crucial game took place in Port Harcourt, where Nigeria defeated Ghana, securing their World Cup ticket. Despite initial apprehension, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed receiving a donation from Nigeria, which was later clarified as a personal contribution from Governor Odili.

Liberia's captain at the time, George Weah, believed the scenario cost his team a chance to play in the World Cup. The NFA secretary general explained Nigeria's response to FIFA's query, stating that the donation was meant to motivate the Ghanaian team.

Former Black Stars captain Charles Akonnor and Minister Joe Aggrey later admitted to accepting the money, sparking controversy and accusations of sabotage.
