Delta Flooding Displaces Residents in Oghara, Delta State

Heavy rainfall has led to significant flooding in Oghara, Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State, displacing residents and submerging homes and property. In response, the Delta State Government initiated a damage assessment, with Commissioner for Bureau of Special Duties, Ejiro Terry Etacherure, leading the State Emergency Management Team's inspection on Monday.

Etacherure expressed sympathy for the affected residents and indicated that the government would explore immediate relief measures while addressing long-term flooding solutions. He urged residents to take responsibility for their environment, warning against indiscriminate refuse dumping and obstruction of drainage channels, which exacerbate flooding.

The commissioner directed the Environmental Department of the Ethiope West Local Government Council to start sensitization campaigns and clear blocked drainage channels. Flooding remains a persistent issue in Delta State, with Oghara previously identified for flood and erosion-control interventions.

The state government had also prepared for flooding by identifying vulnerable communities and potential emergency shelters ahead of the rainy season.
