Delta State Government Addresses Flash Flooding Concerns

The Delta State Government has reported that the flooding affecting parts of the state is classified as flash flooding, with Commissioner for the Bureau for Special Duties, Terry Etacherure, assuring residents that it is not yet the major flood that typically causes widespread displacement. Speaking in Asaba on Tuesday, Etacherure emphasized that flooding is an annual occurrence in Delta and that the government has implemented measures in anticipation of the rainy season's peak.

He chairs a flood committee that includes representatives from relevant ministries and local government officials from flood-prone areas. The current flooding is attributed to heavy rainfall and blocked drainage channels.

Etacherure warned that indiscriminate refuse dumping in drainage systems exacerbates the situation. The government is actively educating residents on maintaining clean drainage and has identified locations for potential Internally Displaced Persons camps.

He acknowledged that long-term solutions to flooding would require significant investment in drainage infrastructure.
