Niger State Introduces 'Two Abode' Policy for Flood Relief

The Niger State government is set to introduce a "two abode" policy aimed at reducing the impact of floods in communities, particularly in flood-prone areas. This initiative will provide upland residences equipped with social amenities for families living in riverine areas, allowing them to relocate during the rainy season.

Dr Ahmed Ibrahim Inga, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, announced this in Minna on Wednesday, emphasizing the need for special attention to women and children, who are often the most affected during such disasters. The policy was developed after recognizing the strong attachment of riverine communities to their ancestral lands.

Following a recent flash flood that destroyed hundreds of houses in Minna, Inga described the situation as a "major disaster" and stated that the government is compiling data on victims and damage to provide appropriate assistance. He attributed the flooding to indiscriminate construction along waterways and urged residents to be mindful of their environmental impact.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency has activated help desks across the state for timely flood-related assistance.
