Northern Senators Demand Permanent Flood Solutions in Niger

On Wednesday, Northern senators, under the Northern Senators’ Forum led by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, called for a permanent solution to the recurring flooding in Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State. They emphasized that reliance on emergency relief measures leaves communities vulnerable.

The senators proposed the development of a Shiroro Flood Management Master Plan, which should include a scientifically determined flood-buffer strategy for the Shiroro, Kainji, and Jebba dams, alongside a permanent flood forecasting and early-warning system supported by trained local volunteers. They also advocated for a comprehensive floodplain resettlement program to assist those repeatedly affected by flooding.

An independent technical review of dam operations was also requested to manage water releases effectively. While commending the National Emergency Management Agency for its relief efforts, the senators stressed the need for immediate short-term measures to support communities facing the peak of the rainy season, including timely distribution of relief materials and emergency evacuation teams.
