Northern Senators Demand Flood Management Plan for Niger

Northern senators, under the leadership of Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua from Katsina Central, are calling for a permanent solution to the flooding issues in Niger. They demand the development and implementation of a Shiroro Flood Management Master Plan, which should incorporate a scientifically determined flood-buffer operating strategy for the Shiroro, Kainji, and Jebba dams.

The senators propose establishing a permanent flood forecasting and early-warning system, alongside a comprehensive floodplain resettlement program that includes planned settlements, compensation, and livelihood support for affected individuals. They also stress the importance of an independent technical review of dam operations and reservoir capacities to manage future water releases effectively.

While acknowledging the efforts of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in providing relief materials, the senators express concern over the recurring flooding in Shiroro and other riverine communities. They urge immediate activation of short-term measures, including timely distribution of relief materials and community education on safety advisories.
