Flash Floods in Nairobi Claim 23 Lives, Rescue Efforts Ongoing

A devastating flash flood in Nairobi, Kenya, has resulted in at least 23 fatalities, as confirmed by local authorities. The heavy rains that began late Friday transformed major roads into rivers, inundating thousands of homes and businesses.

Emergency teams are actively searching for survivors and recovering bodies. Among the victims, two neighbors, Frederick Wasonga, a car accessories dealer, and Derrick Juma, a local panel beater, were reported dead.

Additionally, at least 29 people were rescued overnight by the police and the Kenya Red Cross Society, which continues to respond to distress calls. The floods have caused extensive damage across the city and several counties, destroying homes and farmland.

President William Ruto has directed emergency response teams to coordinate rescue and relief efforts, emphasizing the urgent need for solutions to the persistent challenges of urban flooding. The severe weather has also disrupted air travel, leading to flight diversions by Kenya Airways.
