FMLD Launches Tsetse Fly Control in Akwa Ibom

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD) commenced tsetse fly surveillance and control operations in Akwa Ibom on Monday. Mr.

Ikankeabasi Ukpong, the state coordinator for FMLD, emphasized the need to renew efforts against the hazards posed by tsetse flies, which are known to transmit African trypanosomiasis, commonly referred to as sleeping sickness. The surveillance will focus on areas with significant livestock populations, particularly in the humid tropics of the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria.

Dr. Teddi Essien, the state director of veterinary services, expressed gratitude to the federal government for prioritizing this initiative, which includes collaboration on agricultural programs.

The project aims to mitigate the economic losses associated with diseases like nagana, which affects cattle, sheep, and goats. The surveillance will cover local government areas such as Itu, Mbo, and Oron, with traps set to monitor tsetse fly populations.
