Nigeria Partners with USDA to Boost Fisheries Sector

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy (FMMBE), Mrs. Fatima Sugra Tabi’a Mahmood, reaffirmed the Nigerian government's commitment to the USDA Food for Progress Programme during a meeting with a delegation from Partners of the Americas, led by Mr. Gustavo Galdo, in Abuja. Mahmood emphasized the initiative's potential to strengthen Nigeria's fisheries and aquaculture value chain, highlighting its importance for food security, employment generation, and sustainable economic growth.

She assured the delegation of the Ministry's support in policy guidance and coordination for effective programme implementation. Mr. Galdo introduced the programme's objectives, focusing on improving productivity and resilience in the fisheries sector.

He outlined key interventions, including access to quality inputs, strengthened market systems, and increased private-sector participation. Baseline studies are underway to guide targeted interventions, ensuring alignment with Nigeria's national priorities and addressing gaps in the sector.
