Babachir Lawal Backs Tinubu, Rejects Atiku for 2027

Babachir Lawal, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, publicly declared his support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections, rejecting the candidacy of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. During an appearance on the Naija Unfiltered Podcast, Lawal expressed that an Atiku presidency would lead to disorder, stating, "Because he's not a good man." Initially considering supporting Atiku due to concerns in northern Nigeria, Lawal's perspective changed after working with him, alleging that Atiku often reversed decisions after consulting others.

Lawal also revealed that Atiku had approached him to discuss a potential running mate, suggesting Peter Obi, who ultimately declined the offer, preferring not to join a ticket he believed could not win. Lawal attempted to persuade Obi through prominent Igbo figures, but these efforts were unsuccessful.

These comments come as opposition figures explore alliances for the upcoming elections.
