Alausa Enforces Four-Year Degree Completion Mandate

The Federal Government has mandated that all four-year degree programs must be completed within the designated four years. This announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, on Tuesday in Abuja during the unveiling of the 2026 agreements between the government and various academic unions.
This initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s campaign promise to ensure timely completion of degree programs. Alausa emphasized the government's commitment to resolving disputes that disrupt academic calendars and student progress.
To facilitate this, the existing Implementation and Monitoring Committee will be expanded to include both academic and non-academic staff unions across tertiary institutions. This committee will monitor agreements, assess progress, and ensure accountability.
Alausa urged union leaders to address complaints through the committee rather than through public confrontations. The agreements will be reviewed every three years to address emerging concerns.
Shammah Kpanja, the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, noted that the negotiation process was the fastest in the union's history.
