France, Nigerian Universities Launch ₦949m Green Initiative

A partnership between France and 13 Nigerian universities aims to transform plastic waste into a green economy opportunity valued at ₦949 million. This initiative, which officially concluded on June 30th in Abuja, focuses on creating a circular economy by enhancing recycling capabilities on university campuses.

The project, evaluated by Bluerafrica, reported that participating institutions collectively diverted 145.2 metric tons of plastic waste from landfills daily and converted 79.3 metric tons into marketable products. Over 1,500 students received specialized training in recycling technology and circular economy innovation.

French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbausti, emphasized the importance of recycling in waste management as a significant business opportunity that can create jobs and stimulate innovation. The program also aims to strengthen scientific collaboration between French and Nigerian universities beyond the project's lifespan, ensuring a sustainable transition towards a circular economy.
