Gas Leak at Ogun School Hospitalizes Students, Teachers

On April 30, a gas leak at Ladi Apostl Secondary School in Ijebu Ode led to the hospitalization of students and teachers. The incident also affected other schools, including Anglican Girl Grammar School, prompting a rush to state and private medical facilities.

Eyewitnesses described the situation as alarming, with students fainting and teachers attempting to assist. Ogun State Government officials, including Ola Oresanya, the Commissioner for Environment, and Dare Alebiosu, the Chairman of Ijebu Ode Local Government, assessed the situation.

They confirmed that air quality monitoring devices recorded elevated methane (CH4) concentrations in the area, reaching approximately 13,500 ppm. The state government is committed to safeguarding public health and will deploy a multi-agency team to investigate the source of the gas emissions and evaluate exposure risks.

Parents are advised to remain calm and report any unusual symptoms to health facilities.
