Fubara Launches Upgraded 100-Bed Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital

On Thursday, Governor Siminalayi Fubara officially commissioned the upgraded 100-bed Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital located in Rumuigbo, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State. This initiative aims to strengthen mental healthcare delivery and combat drug addiction in the state.

The governor noted that the hospital, originally established in 1970 and commissioned in 1977 with a 50-bed capacity, had deteriorated significantly over the years, becoming a target for illicit drug trafficking. The newly reconstructed facility includes a 100-bed rehabilitation unit, perimeter fencing, and controlled access points to enhance security.

Fubara emphasized the role of unemployment and social pressures in mental health struggles and addiction, advocating for structured rehabilitation centers. He urged the local community to take ownership of the facility to prevent vandalism.

Afam Osigwe, the outgoing President of the Nigerian Bar Association, praised the government's focus on mental health, calling for the dismantling of stigma surrounding mental health conditions and advocating for accessible care for all citizens.
