Fubara Pushes Technical Education Push at Rivers Polytechnic Inauguration

Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara calls for Nigeria to prioritize vocational training over academic certificates to address unemployment.
During a ceremony at Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic in Rumuola, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara called for Nigeria's education system to pivot from excessive reliance on paper qualifications. Instead, he advocated for greater emphasis on hands-on vocational and technical training.
On Wednesday, the governor inaugurated three new facilities: an Entrepreneurship Centre, an Engineering Faculty Building, and a Governing Council Building. In his remarks, Fubara contended that Nigeria's current educational framework—which emphasizes academic certificates—has substantially fueled unemployment and economic stagnation throughout the nation.
For Nigeria to meet the demands of modern economies, Fubara argued, the nation must revise its curriculum framework by widening vocational and technical education opportunities. He emphasized that providing young Nigerians with practical technical skills and applied competencies would strengthen their prospects for self-employment, capacity for job creation, and overall workplace productivity.
The governor's statements underscore worries among Nigerian leadership regarding gaps between the credentials held by university graduates and the hands-on competencies that employers require. Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, the site of Wednesday's inauguration, stands among Rivers State's educational institutions specializing in applied disciplines and technical programs.
