Bayelsa State Approves New Allowances for University Staff

The Bayelsa State Government has approved the implementation of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance for academic and non-academic staff at the Niger Delta University (NDU), Bayelsa Medical University (BMU), and the University of Africa, Toru-Orua (UAT). Peter Akpe announced this approval during a meeting with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on a Friday. The decision follows a resolution from the state House of Assembly and will cost the government an additional N500 million monthly.

Payments for the wage increase, totaling approximately N2.25 billion, are set to commence in October 2026, while wage award arrears of 25 to 35 percent will be addressed next year. Akpe urged ASUU to end its ongoing indefinite strike to allow academic activities to resume and assured that the government has included the payment of outstanding arrears in its 2027 budget.
